A new investigation by Act For Farmed Animals with We Animals Media has revealed a shocking reality on farms producing duck eggs in Indonesia.

OUR INVESTIGATION SHOWS DUCKS:

Confined in tiny cages, unable to walk or express their natural aquatic behavior, causing heat stress and frustration.

Without proper veterinary care.

Living in squalor exacerbated by dead bodies and excrement, creating an unbearable stench.

AND THEN THEY’RE SLAUGHTERED…

Slaughterhouses investigated also had major welfare problems. Ducks’ throats are slit while they were fully conscious until they die, slowly and painfully. Workers slaughter ducks in front of other ducks in the slaughterhouse and in the markets. Ducks can witness their friends being dismembered in front of them.

WHAT DOES SCIENCE SAY?

Scientific studies are clear: housing ducks at high densities can have negative impacts on foot and leg health, increase stress leading to abnormal behaviors such as feather pecking, and increase risk of disease and thermal stress.

Ducks are aquatic animals and spend a large part of their lives in the water, which is essential for them to perform a variety of important natural behaviors such as sieving, dabbling, preening, and head dipping. Bathing is also crucial for maintaining healthy body temperatures, good feather condition, and to keep their nostrils and eyes clean.

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST CASE!

In 2019, a similar investigation from Act For Farmed Animals showed shocking conditions in the production of chicken eggs, such as animals being practically immobilized in cages with untreated diseases and dirty environments.

PLEASE HELP ANIMALS NOW!

It's time to ask our governments to launch policies to end intensive methods such as dry confinement for ducks and battery cages for hens. Please ask Indonesian authorities to:

cage (1).png

Provide incentives for Indonesia to phase out battery cages for hens and ducks.

Have proper enrichment for both species to carry out their natural behaviors, including water access for ducks.

Support farmers to transition to higher welfare systems.
